Overview
Team of Destiny: Inside Washington's Legendary 2023 Season is a publication created for The Daily UW to celebrate the UW Football Team going all the way to National Championships in the 2023 NCAA Football Season. As the Design Editor at the Daily UW, I was in charge of organizing and producing the design of the entire 154 page book. We had roughly one and a half months to format the entire book, and it was my first time producing something of this scale.
work distribution
As the design editor, I was in charge of creating a style guide for the book to follow. I had to work with already existing Daily UW branding, but wanted to establish the brand for the book as it's own material. I was also in charge of organizing the content for the entire book, as well as guiding and instructing my team of designers in the processes of editorial design.
Chapter Spread
In order to keep the book organized, each game was split up into one chapter. At the beginning of each chapter, I placed the team that the UW Huskies played against, the final score, and a small blurb reflecting on the game in order to introduce the chapter.
DATA VISUALIZATION
At the end of every chapter, I included a data visualization which had statistics from each game. This included a final score breakdown, different distance stats, and a time breakdown, amongst others. This was done to wrap the whole chapter up with a nice bow.
STYLE TILE
In order to establish the football book as a product of The Daily UW, but still have it stand alone as it's own entity, I created a new style guide that built upon already existing Daily guidelines. The headline font is a condensed version of The Daily's brand font, Avenir Next, and the colors are built upon the UW Huskies' main colors.
ORGANIZATION
I used Google Sheets to organize and plan out the pages. Each chapter broke down into four main parts: a section cover, a game recap, numbers and stats, and photo galleries. I used this same document to later assign designers to specific pages, and to track progress as we moved towards completion.
Example pages
Here's a small selection of some of the pages I designed in spread format.
